ANTIOCH SPORTS LEGENDS to INDUCT ATHLETES

Although Antioch was a small mill town of less than 6,000 people 60 years ago, its enthusiastic support of prep sports began producing a long roster of future professional athletes.  The town nurtured future NFL Hall of Famer Gino Marchetti in the 1940s and in the 1960s.  It sent Gene Rounsaville to the major leagues and Duane Putnam to the NFL.  Today it’s the hometown of Aaron Miles, former second baseman on the 2006 World Series Champion St.

ANTIOCH, CA – Some of this city’s best athletes of the past and a team of standout players will be part of the 2008 slate of inductees into the Antioch Historical Society’s Sports Legends Program Museum. The program – now in its second year - has received widespread acclaim and admiration from the community for its spectacular displays of local sports history and memorabilia, housed in the 2,500 square-foot lower level of the museum building. The five Sports Legends founders were honored as the 2007 Antioch Citizens of the Year.

SPORTS LEGENDS KICK-OFF WEEKEND EVENTS

The ANTIOCH SPORTS LEGENDS program, sponsored by the Antioch Historical Society, will kick-off a weekend of festivities honoring Antioch’s sports legends of the past, beginning with a half-time presentation of the Class of 2009 inductees at the football game between Antioch High and Deer Valley High at approximately 8:30 pm, Friday, Nov. 6.  The varsity game begins at approximately 7:00 pm at the Antioch High School Eells Stadium, 18th and L Streets.

Aaron Miles, from Antioch High School and now a second baseman with LA Dodgers had three hits and a RBI, in 4-3 loss to the World Champion San Francisco Giants at AT&T Ball Park on April 13, 2011.
